New Zealand adopts GLOBALink (July 07 2010)

Arinc has deployed three GLOBALink remote ground stations (RGS) to support aviation data link communications services in New Zealand.

New Zealand adopts GLOBALink

The new system is designed to improve in-flight data transfer and communications between airline operation centres and flight decks. New Zealand is the twelfth Asia-Pacific nation to adopt GLOBALink. The new ground stations were successfully installed at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington with the support and cooperation of AeroThai, ARINC’s regional communications partner, and Airways New Zealand, the country’s air navigation service provider.

The VDLM2-enabled ground stations have the capability and capacity to support increasing datalink requirements in the future. VDLM2 (VHF data link mode 2) has high bandwidth and can handle large amounts of data at high speeds.

“The decision to introduce GLOBALink data link service marks a positive step that will bring enhanced operational efficiency and safety to all of the carriers serving New Zealand,” stated Jim Martin, managing director of ARINC’s Asia Pacific Division.

Airways New Zealand has agreed to maintain and manage the new data link ground stations. John Pringle, Christchurch Technical Manager, said, “A key role for Airways New Zealand will be to apply our depth of experience in administering flight information communications.”

With the addition of New Zealand, ARINC’s GLOBALink network infrastructure in the Asia/Pacific region has now expanded to more than 150 Remote Ground Stations located across 12 countries, including China, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand.
